Eloise, my daughter’s name,
Barry Ryan (born Barry Sapherson, 24 October 1948, Leeds, Yorkshire) was an English pop singer. He is currently a photographer.
The son of pop singer Marion Ryan, Ryan and his twin brother Paul began to perform at the age of 16. In 1965 they signed a recording contract with Decca and, under the name of “Paul & Barry Ryan”, brought out singles such as “Don’t Bring Me Your Heartaches” (1965), “Have Pity on the Boy” (1966) and “Missy Missy” (1966). His stepfather was the American agent and music promoter Harold Davison.
When it turned out that Ryan’s brother was unable to cope any longer with the stress connected with show business, the brothers decided that Paul would write the songs which Ryan would interpret as a solo artist. Their greatest success as a composer singer duo, now for MGM Records, was “Eloise” (1968), melodramatic and heavily orchestrated. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.[1] Later singles included “Love Is Love” (also 1968), “The Hunt” (1969), “Magical Spiel” (1970) and “Kitsch” (1970)

My daughter’s name came from Barry Ryan’s song ‘Eloise’ of the late 1960’s, one of my favorite songs of all time. However her mother disagrees, her Eloise is from band ‘The Damned’ below I included both versions, why not listen to them both and let me know your choice… Either way I think it is a fabulous medal for my daughter’s name. Her middle names are of my mother. Eleanor Ninon.
The Damned – version circa 1984
Isn’t that one of the best songs ever? I always remembered the song but had forgotten the artist for ages. For some reason I got the Ryans confused with Alan Price and Georgie Fame. Hmmm!
I’ll listen to The Damned tomorrow although I’ll be biased before I even start. Such sweet notes in that song with Ryan’s amazing voice.
One of the best songs I agree with you, but Alan Price and co’ yes a very big hmmmm!
Thank you for liking and enjoying the songs,, I prefer Ryans version…;)
I didn’t get very far with the Damned. But I guess I was biased to start with. Although I come from Yks, it often surprises me the musicians who have come from my patch. How about a Beautiful South post? Later era, I know, but don’t Marry her – etc.
John Barry and the James Bond theme – fits the era. Joe Cocker. Kike Dee. Tony Christie. And another later band – Human League.
Well well roughseas, I really love the ideas of your requests, I will certainly have a look into some and do a little research for some for you. Thank you for your support and will try and give a little back thank you. 😉
Beautiful tribute post to Your Eloise.
My preference hands down will be Barry Ryan, the era and his vocals are my reasons. I think he has a rich quality to this tune that is obvious the lyrics are meaningful to even the artist. His version feels genuine.
Thanks for sharing this, such a significant song for you My kind Sir.
I so agree, The Ryans version has a little more power and feel. The original in this case is the best…Thank you my lady honored and welcome///:)
